Membership

The Association is non-profit making and is open to all owners of boats kept in Looe and the surrounding district.  Social membership is available for non boat owners who have an interest in boating.

Objectives

The Association aims to promote, protect and further the interests of boating of all kinds in Looe and the surrounding district.  We advise members in boat safety, navigation and maintenance as well as fostering a community spirit through social events and activities both afloat and on shore.

About the Association

Looe Boat Owners Association (LBOA) was formed by local (and not so local) boat owners with moorings in and around Looe. The club was formed in 2002 by Dave Peat, the current Chairman, and at that time the proud owner of Talland Lass, a 23 foot Princess cruiser. Dave wondered if other Looe berthed boat owners were interested in getting together in some form of association to discuss mutual problems and experiences and to meet socially.

They were! The first members signed up in May of that year.

From a modest beginning the club grew quickly and membership has settled down to about the 40 mark. Although many members have a boat, boat ownership is not a pre-qualification for membership. Some are social members with no boat at all and other members have moved their boats to other locations but remain in the club. The usual reason for this is that they have formed close links with other members and enjoy the sociability that the club provides.

The club enjoys close association with Looe Sailing Club, based in Buller Road, Looe, where LBOA hold most of their meetings. The Calendar page shows when meetings take place. These follow brief formal committee meeting where correspondence or issues of interest to members are raised and dealt with. General club evenings are designed to be both social and informative. There is usually free cheese and biscuits and speakers talk on a range of topics, relevant to Looe boat owners. Membership listing is updated and issued quarterly to all members.

The current joining membership fee is £18 a year per boat/family, and £15 a year thereafter.

There are also close connections with Looe Harbour Commission and the Harbourmaster often visits to speak on issues or activities which may be of particular interest.

The club is involved in various initiatives, some of which they spearhead, such as improved launching facilities (see the Millpool Slipway page), or supporting events such as Looe's bid for involvement with the London 2012 Olympics. Looe Bay is generally regarded as one of the best venues in the UK for sailing and boating and this year Looe Sailing Club hosted the World Redwing Sailing Championship.

The club is run voluntarily by several of its members and members live up to 250 miles away. River BBQ's and weekend social events, such as sailing to Fowey for lunch or overnight stays often occur. Many of these events take place on an ad-hoc basis where members arrange to get together on their own initiative, often based on demand.
